On June 5, 2024, Hindustan Zinc, a prominent figure in integrated zinc-lead-silver production, marked notable achievements in reducing its carbon footprint. It has achieved a 14% reduction in greenhouse gas emission intensity compared to the baseline year 2020.
Hindustan Zinc is recognised as the foremost sustainable company in the metals and mining sector. According to the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2023, Hindustan Zinc continues to make significant progress in its journey towards decarbonisation. It is actively pursuing Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) validated objectives to attain Net Zero emissions status by 2050.
Hindustan Zinc adopts a dual strategy to address its carbon footprint in line with its overarching vision and Vedanta’s sustainability framework. Firstly, the company focuses on mitigating emissions by increasing the proportion of renewable energy in its energy mix and enhancing operational efficiency.
For instance, its Pantnagar Metal Plant relies entirely on green power. Hindustan Zinc has entered a 450-MW renewable power delivery agreement expected to offset approximately 2.7 million tons of CO2 emissions annually.
Moreover, the company has introduced battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in underground mines and initiated the deployment of 180 LNG vehicles and electric trucks in logistics for inter-unit and finished goods transportation, aiming to reduce Scope-3 emissions by 25% by 2030.
Hindustan Zinc persistently engages in extensive afforestation efforts to establish carbon sinks to counterbalance its carbon footprint. It has committed to planting 1 million saplings by 2025 across its operational sites, a significant increase from the baseline set in FY 2020. This initiative aligns with Vedanta’s commitment to planting 7 million trees, contributing to the World Economic Forum’s 1 Trillion Trees movement.
In observance of World Environment Day, Hindustan Zinc launched a large-scale afforestation campaign and committed to planting more than 1,00,000 saplings throughout its business units. It arranged a week-long array of interactive activities, including environmental quizzes, sapling distribution, and competitions such as fireless cooking and eco-friendly cricket tournaments, all aimed at fostering environmental awareness.
As a part of the Vedanta group, Hindustan Zinc has earned the esteemed Leadership Band (A-) recognition from CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) for its outstanding endeavours in ensuring water security and addressing climate change.
