The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has teamed up with ABB India to create a modern teaching lab for electrical machines and drives in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering.
This collaboration aims to give undergraduate and postgraduate students hands-on experience with advanced industrial equipment, preparing them for careers in the rapidly changing energy and industrial sectors while promoting sustainability.
The lab will include energy-efficient electrical machine sets, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to provide practical training. With ABB India’s support, the lab will help train future engineers with the skills and knowledge they need to innovate sustainably in the industry.
Electrical machines and drives are essential for many industrial applications. With advancements in power electronics and control methods, various types of electrical machines have been developed to meet specific performance requirements. As industries increasingly adopt energy-efficient technologies, it’s crucial for engineering students and researchers to understand these innovations.
Previously, IIT Roorkee worked with ABB India to create a smart electricity distribution network and management system on its campus. In 2019, ABB India partnered with the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research (NITTTR) Chandigarh to establish a unique multi-physics digital simulation centre. The company also runs various upskilling programs and engages with young people to enhance their employability.
In Faridabad, ABB India collaborated with Udayan Care to set up a Community Information Technology and Skill Center aimed at helping girls from low-income families gain self-sufficiency through IT and vocational training. Additionally, ABB India signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to renovate the Government Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in the Peenya Industrial Area of Bengaluru, one of the city’s oldest industrial zones.
ABB is a leader in electrification and automation, working on the road to a more sustainable and efficient future.
