The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has reported substantial progress in India’s renewable energy sector, showcasing significant achievements between December 2023 and December 2024. The total installed renewable energy capacity has reached a remarkable 209.44 GW as of December 2024, marking a 15.84% increase from 180.80 GW in December 2023.

Record Capacity Addition in 2024

India added 28.64 GW of renewable energy capacity in 2024, representing a year-on-year increase of 119.46% compared to the 13.05 GW added in 2023. This surge underscores the nation’s commitment to accelerating its transition to sustainable energy sources.

Solar Power Leads the Charge

Solar energy was the primary driver of growth, contributing 24.54 GW to the total capacity added in 2024. This pushed the cumulative installed solar capacity to 97.86 GW, a 33.47% increase from 73.32 GW in 2023. Solar energy continues to be a cornerstone of India’s renewable energy ambitions.

Steady Growth in Wind Energy

Wind energy also experienced significant growth, with an additional 3.42 GW installed in 2024. The total installed wind energy capacity now stands at 48.16 GW, reflecting a 7.64% increase from the 44.74 GW recorded in 2023.

Bioenergy and Small Hydro Projects Show Progress

Bioenergy installations grew by 4.70%, with total capacity rising from 10.84 GW in December 2023 to 11.35 GW in December 2024. Small hydropower projects saw incremental growth as well, with capacity increasing by 2.20%, from 4.99 GW in 2023 to 5.10 GW in 2024.

Implications for India’s Energy Transition

The remarkable progress in renewable energy capacity highlights India’s dedication to achieving its climate goals and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The record-breaking growth in 2024, led by solar and wind energy, demonstrates the country’s commitment to a sustainable and resilient energy future.
