The Sir Ratan Tata Industrial Institute (SRTII), a subsidiary of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, focuses on empowering women through employment opportunities. Recently, Leah Tata (39) and Maya Tata (36) were appointed as trustees on the SRTII board, replacing Arnaz Kotwal and Freddy Talati. The appointments come as part of a broader restructuring within the organisation.
The appointments were made under the directive of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust board, which includes Noel Tata, Vijay Singh, Venu Srinivasan, Darius Khambata, Jehangir H. Jehangir, and Mehli Mistry. According to SRTII’s trust deed, the Sir Ratan Tata Trust reserves the right to nominate three of the six board members for SRTII. These changes are to bring fresh perspectives to the institute’s operations.
With this, Noel Tata’s children Leah, Maya, and Neville Tata are now part of all smaller Tata Trusts, although they have not yet been inducted into the boards of the two major trusts, the Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Allied Trusts, and the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Allied Trusts. This appointment is seen as a step toward preparing Leah and Maya Tata for greater responsibilities within the Tata Group.
Leah and Maya Tata bring experience to their roles. SRTII continues to play an important role in Tata Trusts’ broader philanthropic initiatives, focusing on social welfare and industrial growth. Both appointees are also trustees of the Tata Medical Centre Trust, which manages a cancer hospital in Kolkata.
The leadership changes have not been without controversy. Outgoing trustee Arnaz Kotwal expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of communication regarding her resignation, which she described as abrupt and unexpected. This has highlighted tensions within the organization as it navigates leadership transitions.
