In a strategic move ahead of Union Budget 2025, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved significant changes to top positions within the Ministry of Finance. These changes, announced on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, reflect the government’s focus on gearing up for the budget presentation on February 1 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
Tuhin Kanta Pandey, an IAS officer of the 1987 Odisha cadre, has been appointed Secretary of the Department of Revenue. Notably, he will continue as Finance Secretary, underscoring his critical role in shaping the ministry’s financial agenda.
Pandey’s contributions have been monumental, particularly in spearheading landmark initiatives such as the privatisation of Air India and the public listing of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). With a master’s degree in economics from Punjab University and an MBA from the UK, his expertise in financial and administrative reforms is well recognised.
Arunish Chawla, an IAS officer of the 1992 Bihar cadre, has been appointed Secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM). In addition, Chawla will hold additional charges as Secretary of the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) and the Ministry of Culture until further notice.
Chawla, who was appointed Revenue Secretary just a fortnight ago on December 25, 2024, brings vast experience from his previous role as Secretary of Pharma in the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilisers. His dual responsibilities signify the government’s confidence in his ability to manage complex portfolios.
These high-profile appointments come at a critical juncture, with the government preparing for the Union Budget 2025. The reshuffle highlights the need for experienced leadership to address pressing economic challenges and execute reforms effectively. Both Pandey and Chawla have proven track records in handling intricate financial matters, ensuring the Ministry of Finance is well-equipped to steer India’s economic trajectory.
