India’s benchmark equity indices, NSE Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex closed Thursday’s trading session on a positive note. The NSE Nifty 50 gained 34.60 points (0.14%) to settle at 25,052.35, while the BSE Sensex rose 73.80 points (0.09%) to close at 81,785.56.
Broader market indices also ended the day in the green, led by gains in mid-cap and small-cap stocks on Nifty’s weekly expiry day. Among sectoral indices, PSU banks and metal stocks outperformed, driving the market higher. However, the FMCG and IT sectors faced selling pressure, ending the session in the red.
The Bank Nifty index posted significant gains, climbing 607.45 points (1.08%) to close at 49,278.70. In contrast, the Nifty Midcap 100 index declined by 584.80 points (1.08%), ending the day at 54,483.80.

On the losing side, the following stocks registered notable declines:
Nifty weekly contracts expire every Thursday, with the expiry occurring on the previous trading day if Thursday happens to be a trading holiday. All contracts are settled at the usual market closing time on the expiry day or at a later time as decided by the exchange.
In cases where the last Thursday of the expiry period falls on a trading holiday, the expiry for individual securities will be shifted to the preceding trading day.
It is also important to note that in the MarketWatch, expiry dates for the final week’s contracts are not displayed, as they are considered monthly contracts. Instead, only the month name and the strike price are shown.
India’s largest options contract, Nifty Bank, which has often been viewed by retail F&O traders as a high-risk, high-reward bet, had its last weekly expiry on November 13, 2024. This comes as the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) implements new regulations starting next week.
Currently, Nifty Bank’s monthly and quarterly contracts expire on the last Wednesday of the month, while the FinNifty contracts expire on Tuesdays. Additionally, Nifty Midcap Select contracts expire on Mondays, and Nifty Next50 contracts have their expiry on Fridays.
