The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) is a flagship initiative launched by the Government of India in February 2019. Designed to supplement the financial needs of land-holding farmers, it provides an annual financial benefit of ₹6,000 in three equal instalments. As one of the largest DBT schemes in the world, PM-KISAN reflects the government’s commitment to the welfare of farmers and the adoption of technology to ensure transparency.
Under PM-KISAN, ₹6,000 is transferred directly to farmers’ bank accounts in three instalments every four months. Over ₹3.46 lakh crore has been disbursed to farmers across all states through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, eliminating middlemen and ensuring transparency.
The scheme’s initial trust-based registration relied on self-certification by farmers. However, to enhance accuracy, the government introduced stringent verification measures. These include Aadhaar integration, e-KYC, land seeding, and collaboration with UIDAI and the Income Tax Department. Farmers who fail to complete these mandatory steps have their benefits temporarily withheld, but pending instalments are released upon compliance.
Efforts to maintain the integrity of PM-KISAN include identifying and recovering funds from ineligible beneficiaries, such as income taxpayers, government employees, and higher-income groups. State governments have recovered ₹335 crore from such individuals. This strict enforcement ensures that benefits reach only the deserving farming community.
