RMC Switchgears Ltd., a Jaipur-based company, has announced a significant expansion of its manufacturing capacity for Smart Metering Enclosures (SMCs). This move is strategically timed to address the anticipated rise in demand for these enclosures driven by AMISP projects across the country. The company estimates this expansion will increase its annual production capacity by an impressive 300,000 units.
To achieve this ambitious target, RMC is expected to invest between Rs. 7 crore and Rs. 10 crore. The company plans to fund this expansion through a combination of its internal reserves and term loans.
Commenting on the expansion, Mr. Ankit Agrawal, Chief Financial Officer at RMC, expressed his optimism. He highlighted that the enhanced production capacity positions RMC “at the right place, at the right time, with the right credentials” to effectively meet the growing needs of AMISP projects. He further emphasized RMC’s proactive approach in delivering high-quality solutions that cater to the evolving requirements of their utility sector clientele.
RMC’s expansion plans are strategically aligned with the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme’s (RDSS) push for smart meter deployment through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This scheme mandates the involvement of Advanced Metering Infrastructure Service Providers (AMISPs). AMISPs are responsible for supplying, installing, maintaining, and operating the smart metering systems. The scheme follows a unique payment structure. AMISPs receive an initial upfront payment to cover a portion of the capital expenditure. This is followed by subsequent performance-based payments spread over a 7 to 10-year period. This structure ensures accountability throughout the project lifecycle.
RMC is strategically positioning itself to capitalize on the substantial demand for smart metering enclosures anticipated under the RDSS. The scheme estimates the installation of around 11.5 lakh enclosures specifically for Distribution Transformer Centre (DTC) meters over the next 2-3 years, where SMC enclosures are mandatory. While the government has already placed orders for approximately 12 lakh enclosures, RMC anticipates significant potential for securing further contracts.
RMC is actively engaged in discussions with key industry players like Genus, Adani, GMR, Monte Carlo, NCC, and Polaris. These collaborations position RMC favorably to secure contracts for supplying enclosures for DTC meters, thereby supporting their AMISP initiatives.
RMC Switchgears’ strategic expansion plans demonstrate a well-timed response to the growing demand for smart metering solutions in India. The company’s investment in increased production capacity positions it to become a key player in supporting AMISP projects. This expansion not only benefits RMC’s financial standing but also contributes to the modernization of India’s power sector by facilitating the wider adoption of smart metering technology. The collaboration with industry leaders further strengthens RMC’s position in this promising market and paves the way for a more efficient and accountable power distribution system in India.
