The weakening of the Indian rupee (INR) against the US dollar (USD) is affecting different industries in varying ways. While some sectors face challenges, software exporters are optimistic about gaining from this trend, especially since a significant portion of their revenue comes from overseas contracts, mainly in North America.
The recent depreciation of the INR against the USD provides a competitive edge to Indian IT companies, as most of their work is delivered offshore. However, many companies with partial foreign exchange hedging policies may only see the full benefits in CY25.
On December 04, 2024, the INR closed at a lifetime low of ₹84.74 against the USD, dropping from ₹84.6850 in the previous session. The currency hit an intraday low of ₹84.7575 on Tuesday, driven by strong demand for the USD and pressure from the non-deliverable forwards (NDF) market. While the Chinese yuan gained strength, boosting other Asian currencies, the INR failed to follow suit.
Several factors contributed to the rupee’s depreciation, including:
Rupee depreciation generally favours exporters like IT companies, which are also poised to benefit from increased US corporate spending on technology.
Additionally, firms like Persistent Systems, LTIMindtree, Wipro, and HCL Tech, which earn over 60% of their revenue from US markets, are better positioned to take advantage of the rupee’s decline.
However, appreciation of the INR against other currencies like the Euro and GBP may offset some gains for companies with exposure to those regions.
While the rupee’s depreciation presents challenges for some sectors, it provides a silver lining for IT exporters. The positive impact on profit margins and global competitiveness, particularly for US-focused companies, highlights the nuanced effects of currency fluctuations on the economy.
