The combined ADTV for the futures and options (F&O) segment on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) fell to ₹280 trillion in December 2024. This marks a sharp 36.56% drop from November’s ₹442 trillion and a staggering 48% decline compared to September volumes.

Key drivers behind this contraction include regulatory measures aimed at controlling speculative activity. Larger contract sizes, higher margin requirements, and a reduced number of tradable products have contributed to this decline. These steps are designed to address excessive speculation and mitigate retail investor losses.

Segment-Wise Performance Highlights

  • Index Futures Turnover: Declined for the second consecutive month.
  • Stock Futures, Index Options, and Stock Options: Recorded three consecutive months of reduced activity.

This downward trend underscores the impact of tightened regulations coupled with increased market volatility and global economic uncertainties, which have led traders to adopt a more cautious stance.

Cash Market Turnover Shows Signs of Recovery

While derivatives trading slumped, the cash market turnover saw a slight recovery, rising 4.4% month-on-month in December after five months of consistent decline. This recovery can be attributed to:

  1. IPO Activity: High-profile listings such as Swiggy and Hyundai drove investor enthusiasm.
  2. Regulatory Reforms: SEBI’s same-day settlement regulation for the top 500 stocks, effective January 31, 2025, aims to enhance liquidity and encourage long-term investment.

Festive Season Impact on Trading Volumes

December is traditionally marked by lower trading volumes due to the holiday season. With foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) taking extended breaks from Thanksgiving to New Year, trading activity typically sees a slowdown during this period.

Strategic Shift Towards Long-Term Investing

Investors appear to be shifting focus from derivatives to the cash market, reflecting a preference for safer and long-term investments amid market uncertainties. This trend highlights growing confidence in equity markets, supported by regulatory reforms and improved IPO participation.
