South Korea’s bakery industry is enjoying its moment in the spotlight, thanks to the rising global popularity of Korean culture and cuisine. The trend is not just confined to snacks; other processed food items like instant noodles, beverages, and rice-based products are also experiencing unprecedented demand.
The United States leads the charge as the largest importer of South Korean bakery products, accounting for 33.5% of exports. China and Japan follow closely, showcasing the widespread appeal of K-food across diverse markets. While bakery products have hit a record high, South Korea’s overall agricultural exports also paint a rosy picture. In the first nine months of 2024, exports of agricultural goods reached $7.38 billion, an 8.3% rise from the previous year. Instant noodles, or “ramyeon,” led the charge with a whopping 29.6% jump to $938 million. Other significant contributions came from snacks ($560 million, up 15.5%), beverages ($557 million, up 13.6%), and processed rice products like gimbap and tteokbokki, which grew by an astounding 41.6%.
The global interest in Korean food is a testament to the cultural wave sparked by K-pop, K-dramas, and films. As international fans indulge in Korean music and shows, many are inspired to try the food associated with this culture. Social media also plays a role, with videos showcasing Korean street food and recipes going viral.
