The 3rd India-Japan Steel Dialogue took place on February 4, 2025, at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. The event was jointly organised by India’s Ministry of Steel and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). Co-chaired by Mr. Vinod Kumar Tripathi, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Steel, India, and Mr. Hideyuki Urata, Deputy Director General, METI, Japan, the dialogue aimed to strengthen bilateral ties in the steel sector.

Key Discussion Points: Economic and Industry Insights

Delegates from both nations exchanged views on:

  • Current economic trends in India and Japan
  • Developments in the steel industry, including emerging technologies
  • Steel trade between the two countries and global market trends
  • Government initiatives in India, such as the release of the Green Steel Report and Taxonomy of Green Steel

India highlighted its growing steel demand driven by infrastructure investments and emphasised its commitment to research and development in the sector. Japan shared insights into its steel industry advancements and capacity-building programmes to promote skill development.

Addressing Global Challenges: EU CBAM and Sustainability

A significant topic of discussion was the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (EU CBAM) and its impact on international steel trade. Both sides deliberated on sustainable steel production, acknowledging the importance of green technologies and reducing carbon emissions.

Japan reiterated its commitment to supporting India in adopting advanced steel production technologies, while India assured continued efforts to enhance ease of doing business for Japanese investors.

Strengthening the India-Japan Steel Partnership

The India-Japan Steel Dialogue acts as a strategic platform to foster collaboration in:

  • Technology exchange and innovation
  • Product diversification and market expansion
  • Workplace safety and skill development

This partnership is guided by the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on the steel sector, signed on December 22, 2020. Both countries reaffirmed their shared vision of enhancing resilience, sustainability, and growth in the steel industry.
