A license is a legal permission granted to engage in an activity that would otherwise be considered unlawful or wrongful. This permission can be given for free, as part of a contract, or in connection with land ownership. The person granting the license is known as the licensor, while the recipient is called the licensee. A gratuitous license can be revoked at any time, but the revocability of a contractual license depends on the terms of the agreement. In contrast, a license coupled with an interest in land is often irrevocable and can even be binding on the licensor's successors.
